  • Idling and performance problem indicative of vacuum leak in system Found vacuum hose that goes from charcol canister to just behind the water pump (really hard to get at) disconnected. Inspection of hose yield a need to update with new silicon hoses.
  • Replaced all vacuum hoses with the blue silicon hoses except those that go to the Thermal Vacuum Valve. Apparently this valve was bypassed with a tee, allowing both vacuum advance and warmup regulator to operate all the time. Valve is too hard to get at for now. Plan on a fall project to replace valve (assuming defective) and do a little TLC to the Valley of Death.

  • Flexible fuel hoses at fuel pump was old and cracking. PITA. One of my barbed fittings would not come off of the fuel hardline. Mauled the barbed fitting nut pretty well, but recovered by dipping the hose in hot synthetic oil to get the teflon liner soft and jamming it onto the fitting. Because of the tighter fit the hoses sit up against the fiberglass shell; I think this makes my noisy fuel pump louder, due to the sound transfer. Will look into this later.
  • Parts Source: PJGrady (orange hoses with teflon inner liner + three new fittings)

  • Work performed at the club's fall tech session with the guidance and help of other fellow members (Dave S., Jim R., Marty M., Rich W.):
  • Installed newly designed AT computer for beta testing. Boy is it nice!
  • T-Panel Reinforcement: Cleaned up surface under T-panel and replaced the strips of foam support under leading half of the T. Reinforcing screws put in. Reformed the hex end of torsion bars (they were a little mushroomed from previous adjustments.
  • Replaced door pistons and set torsion bars. One piston was weak. Replaced the pistons in pairs.
  • Rubber strip running along the hinged side of both doors replaced and new rivets put in.
  • Fuel pump buzz resolved by finding the sweet spot in how the fuel pump sat in the boot without kinking the suction hose. Also padded the fuel hoses with that insulation that is typically slipped over copper pipes in the home. No buzz detectable at all. Deafly quiet in cockpit now... :) Thanks Jim!
  • Louvre grills painted semi-flat black to match each other and mounted in place with foam strips and sealant/adhesive (these grills were missing).
  • Narrowed down a random starting problem to the Cold Start Valve or something related to it. Cold start valve electrical disconnected for now. Don't really need it connected for now.
  • Parts Source: Door Pistions, Rubber Door strips / rivets, Louvre Grill (PJGrady); another Louvre Grill from a friend; Pipe insulation, paint, closed cell foam (Ace Hardware)

  • Commenced garage storage for the winter. Given that I need to access the storage space above the car from time to time, I decided to top-off the gas tank and start and run the D every 2-3 weeks, weather permitting. Been taking it around the block from time to time when the roads were dry to excercise things and keep the car from sitting on the same spots of the tires. Boy! Can't wait to get some real garage storage where I can work on things in the winter time. Currently my garage is not heated and there is barely enought room to get around the D to access parts of the garage (believe it or not).

Wrong screws were in place and the nuts must have vibrated loose and fell off. There was no harm in driving it back home with the way it was. I don't hammer the throttle when I drive.
